Automated occupancy control for cafeterias

The challenge

After COVID, GRI Renewable Industries wanted to control how many people were in each of its six cafeterias. Each one had to show in real time how many people were inside and its maximum capacity, without anyone counting by hand, and they also needed a dashboard to see the occupancy of all of them at once.

What I did

  • Interface design. I designed the occupancy screens in Figma, built to be read at a glance and from a distance while walking through the turnstiles.
  • Frontend development. I built the interface and the logic that consumes the API data and updates the counter automatically with every entry or exit logged at the turnstiles.
  • One screen per cafeteria. Each of the six cafeterias has its own monitor and its own maximum-capacity setting.
  • Overall dashboard. An additional screen brings together the occupancy of every cafeteria in a single view.

Outcome

  • Real-time occupancy visible in 6 cafeterias, with no manual counting.
  • The occupancy of every cafeteria, at a glance, from a single dashboard.
  • Integrated with GRI’s access control system and in use since October 2024.
